Old Man Rex (Star Wars Rebels)
What up everyone. Figured I’d squeeze one more reveal in before we say fuck you to 2020. This next one was supposed to be an easy one, but it turned out being a pretty involved project. Here is, my final reveal for 2020, Old Man Rex from Star Wars Rebels.
I have a real love for Star Wars Rebels. In my opinion, outside of Empire Strikes Back, Rebels is the best Star Wars content out there. The story lines are great, the characters are well developed and it adds to the lore of the overall Star Wars story in a big way. One of things they revisit are a few of the old Clone commanders from the Clone Wars series, my fav of the bunch is Captain Rex, who by this point has aged 14 years (at a higher aging rate because he is a clone, of course).
I made Old Man Rex out of a big ole mixer of parts. The Clone armour parts all come from Clone Commander Kenobi. The upper arms and elbows, from 6 Arm Spider Man, Lower Torso and upper legs from Kannan, Knees from Paladin ML and Belt from Commander Bly. The helmet was from the official Capt. Rex figure, and the unmasked bearded head came from Two Suns Casting.
The tricky part of this build came when trying to make the peg from the upper torso fit into the lower torso socket. It was just wayyyy too long. I considered making the peg shorter, but I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to put it back together securely enough to withhold excessive movement. Instead, I dremeled the socket deeper into the torso to allow for the longer peg to go deeper into the torso. I used some hot glue to add some friction to the peg. It ended up working well.
When it came to sculpting, I originally did not plan on doing anything more than filling peg holes on the arms and legs. While I did do that, I ended up having to resculpt the neck (forgot about it when originally planning the figure) as the original body had fabric texture on the neck. I also ended up bulking up his arms just a bit because they looked scrawny. Finally, I ended up having to sculpt some of the front of the belt because I ruined it while prepping it… oops!
Finally, the paint job was pretty straight forward. It was however, my first time really doing a lot of weathering and dirtying up on armour. So that was fun to toy with. Im also super happy with how the face paint turned out. I still struggle with the fine detailing like the eyes and brows but im starting to get a bit better and its taking less repeats and touch ups before nailing the final application.
So even though Old Man Rex turned out to be a bit more work than I originally intended, im overall happy with how he came together. Could he be a bit heftier? Sure, but im content with how he looks here. Thanks to all for checking out my latest reveal and fuck 2020! Woo! Stay safe out there.
