CW's Brainiac 5, Sentinel and Dreamer (Commission for Jesse Rath)
What up everyone?! Back today with a triple reveal, as they all go hand in hand. This set of figures was commissioned by the very talented Jesse Rath who plays Brianiac 5 on the CW’s Supergirl TV show, here is Brainiac 5, Sentinel and Dreamer.
So, right off the bat, I gotta say this whole experience was so freakin cool! This is the second time I have made figures for Jesse. A couple years back he commissioned me to make him a Brianiac 5 sporting his season 3 look, and to say I was not only excited, but completely flattered that he came back to ask for another figure from me would be a huge understatement. The opportunity to work with him again made me very happy (he was a great customer and an even better collaborator when providing feedback).
But not only did he want a Brainiac 5 figure, he also wanted me to make a figure of a few of his co-stars on the show who never got the opportunity of getting an official figure. So I made him a Sentinel/Alex Danvers for Chyler Leigh and a Dreamer for Nicole Maines. He gifted them as wrap gifts to the respective actors when they were finishing up filming on the final episodes of the series. I may have seen a clip and I may have had goosebumps. Pretty surreal moment for me if im being real.
Each figure was made with a mix of Marvel Legends/Star Wars Black parts. Brainy was made using a movie Magneto figure, lower arms from Tactical Gear Kilmonger, hands from movie Professor X. Both heads were from a knock off Star Wars Black Han Solo in Stormtrooper disguise. I ended up giving him a swappable neck and head to display as his human skin form (along with a few sets of skin tone hands as well).
Sentinel was made using an Infinity War Black Widow torso, Yelena arms and legs (and 1.5 sets of hands), Gamerverse Ms Marvel boots, MCU Wasp head and open hands and the hood options from the Tom Holland Homemade Suit Spider Man. The effects pieces were just random Marvel Legends effects that I sprayed with clear red paint.
Dreamer was built mostly on a White Suit Black Widow body with lots of sculpt on top. I used a Scar Jo head sculpt with a hair cast from MCU Wanda. I borrowed some open hands from Negasonic Warhead and swapped out the knees with a Dr Aphra Star Wars Black figure. Her power effects are the standard Havok effects that work perfectly here, and the tendrils which were made from white wire and sparkly blue hot glue.
There were lots of sculpted details on all 3 of these characters. Both Sentinel and Dreamer had full torso resculpts as well as heavy detailing to the legs and arms. There was lots of texturing used on both as well. Sentinel has textured sculpt on the legs and arms to try to break up all the black in the costume. Dreamer used texturing to break up all the layers of sculpt. It is subtle enough that it doesn’t stand out but is present when its in hand.
Brainy had lots of detailing on the torso and belt but the biggest challenge with him was creating the swappable neck to make in his human skin tone. He comes with a skin tone alternative head with brown hair, along with a few pairs of hands and a magnetic swappable neck. To do this, I had to inset a magnet into the torso and attach one to the bottom of the neck. This allowed for easy swapping while the collar around the neck helped stabilize it when articulating the head.
Speaking of magnets, I also utilized one for Sentinel’s hood down option. I inserted one into the back of her upper torso and one into the hood down option so it would snap and stay in place. The hood up option holds onto the head with friction.
Overall, im so happy with how these figures came together and am so humbled to be able to work with Jesse again. The whole experience, from conception, to development, to the figure hand off and the reaction from the actors who play Sentinel and Dreamer was so incredible. It’s something that will forever stay with me as one of the coolest things ive ever had the opportunity to partake in. Im really hoping to work with him again in the near future. In the meanwhile, thanks to all for checking this out, enjoy the many many photos from the process below. Cheers!
