Sabertooth (90's Style on Omega Red base body)
What up everyone! The next reveal has been a long time coming. My guess is Hasbro will do this themselves in the near future. Here is a PROPERLY SIZED 90’s Sabertooth.
I remember when the Hasbro team first revealed the official 90’s Sabertooth and being so disappointed that it was built on the Hyperion base body. It’s just not a great representation of the stature of Sabertooth as he was portrayed in the 90’s.
Shortly after we were introduced to Sabertooth, Hasbro revealed Omega Red built on a body that IMO perfectly replicated the look of Sabertooth in all his 90’s glory. I was immediately bummed that our brand new Sabertooth was already on an outdated body. I decided to start collecting Omega Red figures so I could make myself a proper Sabertooth (and Bagley inspired Venom).
The recipe was simple: Omega Red base figure. I swapped out the knees with Warpath and the lower arms/hands with the official Sabertooth figure. I also borrowed the mane of hair around the neck and the head from that figure as well. The calm face is a Casting Cave shrunken Marvel Select Sabertooth head and the smiling one was made out of a Dark Beast head (yes I realize it is too big, but once I finally accepted it, it was almost finished so I just finished it).
Sculpting on this guy was minor. I filled peg holes and built up the lower arms a bit so they matched the bigger upper arms. Also had to build up the back of the head and sculpt hair on the Dark Beast head. Otherwise, this guy was all paint!
For the first time in a while, I decided to paint the line details on his costume. I usually sculpt the edges but I actually feel like this looks cleaner. I may start doing more masking rather than sculpting in future projects because I feel like there’s some pretty clean paint lines on this guy.
Overall, im super happy with how Sabertooth came out. He may even be my favourite custom I have created this year. So happy to have one of my fav super villains properly represented on my X-Villains shelf. Up next: a trip to a galaxy far far away! Stick around.
