Cyborg (DC Comics/Marvel Legends style)
Hello everyone. Welcome back for another update (yay, it didn’t even take a full month). Today’s reveal was a load of fun to make (bonus!) Plus, he was made for my fellow customizing buddy New Collector Customs as part of our 3rd annual figure swap (double bonus! he made me a dope ass Classic Electro a couple months back). So without further adieu, check out my Marvel Legends style Cyborg.
This year, I was originally planning on doing a 90’s style Colossus for NC, but once the 80th anniversary one was revealed, he quickly found me a reference pic of a Cyborg that we both thought would look dope. So we ran with that look. To my knowledge it is only seen in this one piece of art, or I couldn’t find anything else that matched it. I also know absolutely nothing about the character (not a dc guy remember?). Once I pieced together a base figure, the magic started happening pretty quickly.
Cyborg was made using a Spider Man UK buck with MCU T’Challa Head (from the Civil War Black Panther), Invincible Iron Man Hands, shoulders, knees and lower legs, and Night Thrasher feet. For the weapon attachments I used arm extenders from Machine Man, parts from Nuke’s giant, weird, awkward gun and the barrels from Mystique/Chameleon guns.
I did quite a bit of sculpting on this guy. There were multiple layers on the torso, arms, legs. You can see the progress of the details in my work in progress pics in the carousel below. I did all my sculpting on this project with Apoxie Sculpt by Aves. It is my goto medium for sculpting, especially when sculpting Armored characters.
New Collector isn’t one for lots of alt parts and gizmos but I just couldn’t make an armored, tech based character without adding some sort of fun weapons. So on a dime, I decided to utilize the flexible hand extenders from Machine Man as the base for my weapons. I made 2 options for the end of the extenders (both connected by a magnet), a laser blaster or annnnother laser blaster. lol. The extenders themselves attach to the back by plugging into some cut down lower arms from Machine Man that I embedded into his armour. I think it works pretty good here.
For the paint job, we did change up the color scheme just a touch from the reference pic. Newcollector was not really feeling the white on the costume so we decided to swap out the white for a lighter silver. I think it turned out really nicely, particularly against the matte black. I still think the white in a gloss white would have looked pretty sharp though. But the light silver definitely works nicely here.
Cyborg was a really fun figure to make. I liked having some creative freedom when it came to designing his legs (which I basically just took components from different versions of Cyborgs I saw and slightly modified). I am very happy that my friend Newcollector got to add another one of my figs to his collection. I really enjoy doing these swaps with my friends from within the Hobby. I love to own art from my friends who I chat with all the time! Its just a unique way I can have their signature touch on my own collection. Its a very cool process.
Up next, some easy (but needed) MCU updates… Nick Fury and Maria Hill are coming in hot, next!
