Longshot (Marvel Now - Fwoosh Secret Santa 2019)
Ho ho ho, welcome to this very special Fwoosh Secret Santa reveal. I have had this figure completed for quite some time now (finished in October) but because it was my entry into 2019’s Fwoosh Secret Santa figure swap, it had to remain a secret. So without further adieu, here is my custom for this years swap, Marvel Now Longshot!
The list I received this year for Secret Santa belonged to a friend (I knew this due to previous convo’s with him about his list). It was full of fun options. I shortlisted it down to 5 characters: Star Lord (modern Grounded look), Gamora (modern armored), teen Loki (modern), Angel (from XMen Prime) and Longshot (Marvel Now). I opted for Longshot after being inspired by Face Customs classic version of the character.
Longshot was made using a Bullseye base body. I swapped the lower arms for Juggernaut wave Havok and the lower legs and boots with a Power Rangers Lightning Collection Black Ranger. The belt is a modified belt from Jubilee wave Cyclops. The head is from the MCU Star Lord from GotG Vol 2 Mantis wave. It is literally perfect for this iteration of the character who is a bit more arrogant look than he used to (must be the hipster down mohawk look he’s got going on). I repurposed a hand from the old Toybiz Longshot and retrofit it to a Hasbro style swappable hand. I made the throwing knives effect using Styrene for the knives and a clear piece of plastic for the part that attaches to the hand.
Similar to my MvC Cable I made not too long ago, Longshot also has a magnetic eye flare which can be attached and removed very easily with the help of some cleverly placed magnets. I used my dremel to hollow out a cavity behind the eye, installed a magnet in the hole and filled it in with apoxie sculpt. The magnet on the back of the effect piece is strong enough to stay in place when it’s put near the eye. The effect piece itself is just a piece of clear plastic I cut from a Testors gloss coat lid. I used my heat gun to soften the edges and bend it to wrap around the face a bit more. I added a second layer by using a hole punch to cut a crescent moon shape and applying it to the effect piece. Once assembled, it was painted using Clear Yellow paint by Tamiya and a very light drybrushing of a pearlescent white around the edges.
Speaking of magnets, I also added them into the palms of both the splayed/open hands and into the throwing effect piece. This way, they attach to both hands (stole that idea from Face customs - thanks buddy!)
Because Longshot only has 3 fingers and a thumb, I had to rebuild all his hands to eliminate one finger. I was dreading this at first but it ended up being easier than I initially anticipated. He has a pair of fists, a pair of open/splayed hands and one hand that holds 3 blades.
There was a fair bit of sculpting done on Longshot. I used Procreate for the collar, the long hair on the top of his head and all the piping on his upper torso. I used apoxie sculpt to blend the collar into the base figure and do the rest of the sculpting details (including the detail work on his chest where the collar starts and the lines that go down the arms).
Finally, I finished him off with a paintjob which I think turned out great. I didn’t want the whole figure to be painted black so I did some details (like the boots, belt, collar and arm paneling) in a high gloss black while muting the rest of the blacks in the costume with some charcoal and blue shading and highlighting. I really like the finished product here. I think it looks real nice. The skin tone also turned out pretty dope (as did my face painting surprisingly).
Overall, I’m totally loving this Longshot figure and am bummed I had to send him to a new home. But I hope Stranded Customs enjoys his new Longshot figure.
