Cable (Marvel vs Capcom)
What up everyone? Im pretty excited to share this next reveal. It was made for my good buddy PymParticles (on IG) as part of our 2nd annual figure swap. For the second year in a row, I’ve tackled a Marvel vs Capcom character for our swap. Without keeping you waiting any longer, check out everyone’s fav time jumping muty, Cable!
When Pym and I did our first figure swap in 2018, I badly wanted to do this version of Cable. However, when I shared his list with my friends, most of them picked War Machine (prob because I had recently done a 90’s style Iron Man that was pretty well received). Once Pym received his War Machine, I flat out told him that Cable would be my pick for our 2019 swap. I was very happy when he obliged.
Cable was made using an Odinson Thor torso and upper legs, Sentry knees and lower legs, Cottonmouth Boots and hands, Bishop right arm, glove cuffs and weapon holding hands, Cable left arm and Capt Britain fists. The calm head was from a WWE Wrestling figure and the angry head is a shrunken Sandman BAF head. For accessories, I used a belt from Marvel Now Cyclops, some additional pouches from ML 6 Cable, kneepads from Shocker (thanks for the idea and the fodder NewCollector!), guns (both small and BFG) from Marvel Select Cable and a cast of the ML 6 Shoulder Pads (for nostalgia sake). Phew... that’s a lot of parts.
I did a good amount of sculpt on this figure. The leg straps, torso harness and parts of the belt were all done with Aves Apoxie Sculpt. The base of the hair was also done using Apoxie Sculpt (as was all the peg hole filling). I then switched over to Procreate to do the bangs on the 2 heads. I did the tabs on the leg straps using Procreate as well.
Speaking of heads, once I decided I was going to have 2 heads, I had to figure out a way to make the eye flare not only removable, but swappable between the two heads. I knew I didn’t want to make 2 effects pieces, so it was time to get creative.
After cutting a small piece of clear plastic from the lid of a can of Testors Gloss Coat, I shaped it using a sharp hobby knife. I then used fine sandpaper to clean up and soften the edges. Once I had the look I was going for, I added a tiny magnet to the back of it. The original plan, was to build a tiny magnet into the pupils of the eyes, but I was worried I wouldn’t be able to save the fine detailing of the eyes when I added them so I decided to take a different approach. Instead, I used my Dremel to hollow out a spot behind the eye (on the inside of then head) to install a magnet so the eye flare sticks to the eye. It’s not the strongest hold, but it does the job. Next time I’ll be a bit riskier and bury the magnet a bit deeper in the face for a stronger hold.
Majority of the painting was done using an airbrush. I am very happy with the end results on the shading on both the yellow and the blue. I also think the pop of chrome on the mechanical arm and the clear yellow on the eye flare look fantastic.
Overall, I am so so so happy with how Cable turned out. I think the finish on the final product was so clean and smooth looking. I even surprised myself. Haha. I was super excited to send it over to Pymparticles, and was even more excited when he had it in hand and I could finally talk about it with him. Yay!
Speaking of swap figures, up next (I hope) will be the concept 90’s X-Men Spider Man figure I made for my buddy TXT Customs. Be on the lookout for that in the next 3 weeks or so. Until then, cheers!
